The Digital Discovery Tool

About the Digital Discovery Tool

The Digital Discovery Tool was developed by Jisc and is an online self-assessment questionnaire for evaluating and reflecting on your digital capabilities, helping you to identify strengths and areas for development. By answering the questions you will be made aware of digital practices that you already have, and new ones you can develop. The Digital Discovery Tool can be used by staff and students as a stand-alone tool.

The questions and report align with the six elements of digital capability in the JISC Digital Capability Framework.

The questionnaire takes about 20 minutes to complete and presents a series of reflective questions that aim to assess your confidence and experience with a host of real-world digital practices. On completing the questionnaire you will receive an individual report showing your current digital skill levels divided into six elements of digital capability, and an indicator of your current level of competence in each. You can use the report as the basis of a development plan.

Your responses to the questions and your report are private.
Use this:
  • If you are a member of staff or a student wishing to measure your digital skills – either as a baseline before starting conversations, development planning or to re-assess your capabilities once you have started developing your skills (including Annual Professional Reviews).
  • If you are a member of staff or a student wanting to identify your individual digital skills, strengths and areas for development, that you can use as the basis of a development path
  • If you are a personal tutor you can use it to guide and equip your students as they prepare for the digital world
